Fresh caught blue cod for dinner

We left Milford Sound in a rainstorm (see the newly formed waterfalls in the picture) and headed south to Stewart Island, where we just finished catching and eating our tasty and unhealthy meal.  After 16 days in New Zealand we can say with confidence that fish and chips is the most quintessentially national food we've encountered.  We caught probably 40 fish and kept the biggest 4.  Our catch included blue cod, trumpeter, a large skate, wrasses, and a spotty.  And we were pestered by gray-headed albatrosses who went after our fish and bait.  After the fishing we took the fillets to local fish shop and they fried them for us.

There was a 7.1 magnitude earthquake in Christchurch today.  We are fairly far away and were not affected, but the mood here is somber as at least 65 New Zealanders are confirmed dead.

  1. Steve Specht says they were in Christchurch 10 days ago and the hotel they stayed at is about to fall down.
